MBABANE – Eswatini’s two major sporting venues have been shortlisted among the 16 facilities that will stage next week’s Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) Games.
SAIMSA Spokesperson Colile Zwane has disclosed that Somhlolo National Stadium and Mavuso Sports Centre will headline the list of venues.
The pair will host some of the flagship events, including football matches and athletics disciplines such as track and field and the race.
The Games, which run from September 20 to 25, will bring together municipal teams from South Africa, Lesotho, Botswana, Zambia and Namibia.
Zwane further said the games will be concentrated in the Manzini–Mbabane corridor, although some events will take place in other towns around the country.
“As preparations intensify, municipalities are already building momentum towards the Games. Teams have wellness days scheduled from Tuesday to Thursday, giving players and participants the chance to train, stay active and prepare for the various sporting codes,” Zwane said.
Zwane, who is working alongside Sakhile Mdluli on the Games’ media team, added that the wellness sessions form part of SAIMSA’s broader objectives: Promoting healthy lifestyles, employee wellness, teamwork and stronger relationships between municipalities.
The competition will open with an official ceremony on Sunday, September 20, at Mavuso Sports Centre.
Furthermore, the full details of the remaining events are expected to be released in the coming days.
