MBABANE – Eswatini’s taekwondo team claimed nine medals to finish second overall at the AUSC Region V Test Event in Mozambique yesterday.
The nine-member team from Next Generation Academy collected four gold, four silver and three bronze medals in a strong showing ahead of next month’s Region V Games in Maputo and Matola.
Bonkhe Mthethwa headlined the impressive performance after winning gold and being named Best Junior Male Player at the competition.
Other gold medals came through Saneliso Masuku, Velile Gwebu and Lindokuhle Fakudze.
Lindelwa Mkhatshwa, Gcinumuzi Nxumalo and Marilyn Matse secured silver medals, while Aphiwe Dlamini, Manesi Maziya and Cebolababe Ntshalintshali completed the medal haul with bronze.
The second-place finish was a significant boost for Eswatini’s preparations for the regional showpiece, which will feature athletes from 10 member countries.
The test event was also designed to assess Mozambique’s readiness to host the taekwondo competition during the Maputo 2026 African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region V Games.
Facilities, technical arrangements and other logistical aspects were put under the spotlight as organisers worked towards ensuring a successful competition next month.
COSATA Technical Delegate for the Maputo 2026 AUSC Region V Games, Sizwe Mabuza, is expected to provide further insight into the preparations and the readiness of the competition venues.
Meanwhile, the event was preceded by a three-day referees’ training camp facilitated by Master Cho and COSATA Referee Chairman Master Mefane from Lesotho.
Also involved were AFTU Technical Committee Member and COSATA President Moshoeshoe Molapo, as well as AFTU Coaches Committee Chair Gladys Njoroge.
The camp formed part of the selection process for technical officials who will be considered for the final officiating panel at the regional Games.
Eswatini World Taekwondo’s internationally qualified referees Diana Stromvig, Bongani Nxumalo, Phiwayinkhosi Dlamini and Guen-Ro Cho participated in the training and selection process.
Their participation provides Eswatini with an opportunity to have its officials represented on the regional Games’ officiating panel.
