MANZINI – Young Buffaloes experienced utility player Simangele ‘Smash’ Sokhondze made history by claiming the first-ever Women Ingwenyama Cup top gong.
The national team Sitsebe towering player was named the Player of the Tournament during the 2024/35 Sincephetelo Motor Vehicle Accidents Fund (SMVAF) gala dinner, which was held at the Mavuso Trade and Exhibition Centre on Thursday night.
The Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA)/Women Champions League-bound player for her effort was awarded E2 000 plus a trophy His Majesty King Mswati III.
Sikhondze majestically walked up the podium to receive her award dressed in traditional regalia, as her team’s theme for the occasion, revealed that she was happy to write her name into the country’s women football history.
“I am very excited since this was the maiden tournament. I hope it does not end with me. Other players should put in more effort in order to win this award,” she said.
Departed Nsingizini Hotspurs goal-poacher Kudakwashe Basopo, who was represented by Captain Nomfundo Bhembe claimed the Top Goalscorer award and she was awarded E1 000.
Meanwhile, the champions’ goal-custodian Nokwanda Mamba went away with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award and went home with E600 for her effort.
Young Buffaloes Ladies defeated Nsingizini Hotspurs 5-1 in the final at Somhlolo National Stadium to lift the inaugural title. They received a reward of E20 000 for showing their mettle in the maiden tournament.
