MBABANE – The Region V Marathon is set to ignite Tshwane, South Africa, on Sunday.

There is a significant E50 000 prize purse for both the male and female winners of the 21.1km race.  All roads lead to the Union Buildings, which will serve as the spectacular backdrop for what organisers are billing as the continent’s most exciting new running spectacle.

With entries continuing to roll in, organisers are urging athletes from across southern Africa to secure their place in the event.

The marathon is designed to blend elite athletics, community participation and cultural celebration, raising the bar for regional competition.

South Africa’s Minister for Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie emphasised the broader vision for the event.

“The Region V Marathon is not just about running; it’s about showing the world the strength, unity and talent of our continent,” he stated.

In a statement shared to this publication, McKenzie highlighted that the event is for everyone, not solely elite athletes and underlined government’s commitment to the sport.

“With big prize money on the table, we are showing our commitment to lifting athletics and creating real opportunities for athletes at every level,” he added, urging all aspiring runners to take part.

Stanley Mutoya, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of African Union Sports Union (AUSC) Region V, hailed the marathon as a historic milestone for the region, noting it is a first of its kind in their history.
