MBABANE – The dust has settled on the AFCON 2025 Round of 16, and as the continent holds its breath for the quarter-finals, a striking narrative emerges.

It is a narrative that pits history against hope, and dynasties against a dream deferred. Among the colossal names vying for African football supremacy, one team stand in stark, yet defiant, contrast: Mali.

As the footballing titans of Egypt, Cameroon, Nigeria and Ivory Coast—with their combined 18 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) titles—prepare for battle, Mali approach the precipice of glory as the sole remaining quarter-finalist never to have tasted the sweet nectar of continental triumph. In a line-up that boast past champions like Algeria, Senegal and Morocco, the Eagles of Mali are the lone wolf in a den of lions, an underdog with everything to prove and a heavy weight of history to shed.

Their best finish, a runners-up medal in 1972, feels like a distant echo in the modern era of African football. While nations around them have etched their names onto the coveted trophy, Mali have consistently been ‘the nearly team’, a side of immense talent and resilience that somehow always falls short at the final hurdle. They hold the unenviable record of playing the most matches in AFCON history without ever lifting the trophy, a statistic that, for many, defines their persistent struggle.

Yet, this statistic now fuels their fire. In a tournament that has already delivered its share of upsets and dramatic twists, Mali’s presence in the final eight is not a fluke; it is proof to their unwavering spirit and a collective determination to rewrite their narrative. They have navigated a challenging group stage and overcome a spirited opponent in the Round of 16, demonstrating a tactical maturity and a fighting spirit that belies their ‘underdog’ tag.

The path ahead, however, is treacherous. This Friday, January 9, Mali face its sternest test yet: star-studded Senegal. The ‘Teranga Lions’ represent the pinnacle of modern African football, a formidable hurdle for any team, let alone one seeking  their maiden title. The clash is more than just a football match; it’s a symbolic confrontation between the established order and the rising aspirations of a nation yearning for recognition.

For Mali Coach Tom Saintfiet  and his squad, this is not just about reaching the semi-finals; it is about breaking a half-century-long curse. It is about inspiring a generation back home and proving that persistence, even in the face of repeated heartbreak, can ultimately lead to glory. The odds are stacked against them; the history books offer little solace, but in the heart of this AFCON, Mali stands tall, a beacon of hope for every team that has ever dared to dream.
