PIGG’S PEAK – A three-year-old boy is recovering in hospital after eating a fat cake mixed with a pesticide.

The incident happened on Saturday at Lubhujini, under Maphalaleni Inkhundla in the Northern parts of the Hhohho Region.

This pesticide used by the family has recently been banned by the Ministry of Agriculture in Eswatini, after many people complained about the lives lost to the substance, as some abused it and committed suicide through its usage. The ministry has informed shops to the selling of this pesticide.

It was gathered that the minor’s mother had placed the poisoned fat cake under the bed to rid troubling rats.

“The woman then went to the fields to weed, leaving her sleeping child behind,” a source said. While she was working, the mother was informed that her child was crying and seemed to have eaten something poisonous.

“The woman rushed back and found that her child had eaten the fat cake she used as rat bait,” the source added.

It was said the child began shaking and was rushed to Pigg’s Peak Government Hospital, where he is currently admitted.

“We thank God that he did not die. He is recovering well and we hope he will be discharged soon,” the source said.

Deputy Police Information and Communications Officer Assistant Superintendent Nosipho Mnguni confirmed the incident.
