When you meet Siboniso Mndeni Lukhele, better known as ‘Mjiri’, you are likely to be struck by his strong build, boundless energy and the discipline that defines his lifestyle. Mjiri has already carved a reputation for himself as one of Eswatini’s most committed volleyball players, respected both here and in several SADC countries.

His journey into fitness and sport began as early as his high school days. While other teenagers were discovering hobbies and trends, Mjiri discovered his passion for training. After school hours, he would push himself through intense workouts, running sprints, lifting and experimenting with strength routines; until he found his true love: Volleyball.

That love only deepened when he joined the Correctional Services team, where the training is famously tough. Under the mentorship of the renowned coach Themba Sifundza, Mjiri was exposed to rigorous sessions that pushed him to the core. “We did everything from jumps, sprints, squats, to flipping huge tires. The discipline we were taught in those sessions shaped not only my body but also my mindset,” he mentioned.

Even when he is not at the training ground, Mjiri does not compromise. At home, he recreates parts of his workout, sprints in the yard, bodyweight training and drills to keep his agility sharp. This self-driven attitude is one of the secrets behind his consistent performance on the court.

Over the years, Mjiri has also become a role model for many young people who admire not only his volleyball skills but also his dedication to health. He believes anyone can start their fitness journey with the right mindset.

Though he admits to being a fan of dunked chicken wings, his diet is carefully monitored. “I know too much starch and unhealthy eating can slow me down, so I make sure I eat with balance. It’s not about perfection but discipline,” said the athlete.

Yet, what stands out most about Mjiri is not only his athletic ability but the discipline he lives by daily. “For me, fitness is not just about sport; it is about life. A healthy body gives you confidence, energy and focus. That is the message I want to share with others,” he concludes.

On the volleyball court, Mjiri is celebrated for his exceptional ball control, accurate passing and powerful attacks. These qualities have earned him recognition beyond Eswatini, at 29 years old; he has showcased his skills in tournaments across the region.

Tips for staying fit

• Start small and stay consistent.

• Mix it up. Combine cardio, strength and agility workouts.

• Mind your diet – Fitness is 70 per cent what you eat and 30 per cent exercise.

• Stay hydrated. Water is the most underrated performance booster.

• Rest matters. Muscles grow and repair when you rest, so don’t skip sleep.

• Enjoy the process. Choose activities you like so that fitness feels less like a chore and more like a lifestyle.
