A paint system is more than just colour, it’s a carefully engineered process where each layer of paint or coating is applied in a specific sequence, with every layer serving a unique purpose.
The Dulux Technical Team emphasises the importance of a complete painting system, which is key to achieving outstanding paint performance. This begins with understanding and preparing the substrate, widely recognised as the most critical step before any coating is applied.
Primer: The foundation of every great paint job, primers are applied to bare surfaces after thorough preparation.
They ensure strong adhesion of the topcoat, boost paint durability and offer extra protection for the substrate. Primers are essential for long-lasting results, helping with adhesion to challenging surfaces, corrosion resistance for metals, sealing porous materials and providing alkali resistance.
Undercoats/intermediate coats: These layers build the total film thickness between the primer and the finishing coat. Never used directly on bare surfaces, intermediate coats extend the life of the paint system.
They enhance protection, reduce permeability to oxygen and water and when highly pigmented, offer excellent hiding power and stain-blocking properties.
Finishing coats/topcoats: The final layer delivers the desired appearance and surface resistance.
For interiors, Dulux topcoats offer stain and scrub resistance (e.g., Dulux Easycare, Luxurious Silk). For exteriors, they provide UV, (e.g., Dulux Wallguard, Weatherguard), standing as the first line of defence against the various elements. Ensure to use Dulux paints, to keep your walls protected and looking good for longer.
