From humble beginnings in a small town, Lomagugu B Mkhonta turned a simple need into a thriving business, proving that determination and a sewing machine are all it takes to stitch your own financial freedom.

With a keen eye for fashion, Mkhonta recognised the need for accessible school uniforms and bespoke designs for special occasions within her community.

Mkhonta is a passionate young woman who brings the world of fashion to her hometown of Mankayane.

Her determination to bridge a gap in her community led her to establish a fashion design business, Gee Creations.

“I saw the gap for a fashion design business after realising that the majority of people in the community walk long distances to get school uniforms and to design clothing for private ceremonies like lobola events, parties and weddings,” she explains.

This realisation became the catalyst for her entrepreneurial ambitions. Located in the heart of Mankayane, Gee Creations has become a hub for fashion-forward individuals seeking unique designs and custom-made garments.

 “Despite starting with a modest capital of E2 000, the business has shaped into a resounding success. By building a loyal clientele and consistently delivering exceptional service, I managed to generate enough profit to sustain the business,” she said.

Innovative marketing strategies, such as leveraging social media, help her to reach a wider audience and attract new customers. However, her true secret lies in her dedication to punctuality. By consistently meeting and even surpassing deadlines, she earns the trust and loyalty of her clients.

Mkhonta admits that her journey to success is not without its challenges. “The lack of fabric shops in Mankayane poses a significant hurdle for the business. However, she devises a clever solution by stocking up on materials from nearby towns, minimising operational costs,” she notes.

As a proud member of the Junior Achievement Eswatini (JAE) entrepreneurship training programme, Mkhonta gained invaluable skills in various aspects of running a business. From developing comprehensive business plans to maintaining meticulous financial records, she demonstrates the importance of continuous learning and growth.

In her own words, she says her thriving business has also brought about a personal transformation.  “The newfound financial stability allows me to upgrade my lifestyle and provide for myself. I attribute the success to my mentor, Tash Creations, whose exceptional work serves as a constant source of inspiration,” she revealed.

Looking ahead, Mkhonta envisions a bright future for Gee Creations. Her ambitious plans include establishing a small factory within the community to supply school uniforms and create employment opportunities for local youth.

Mkhonta’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs

With her infectious enthusiasm, Mkhonta encourages young people to embrace entrepreneurship, empowering them to take control of their time and finances.

Get organised: To achieve success as a business owner, you first have to be well organised.

That will help you complete tasks efficiently and stay on top of the many things that need to be done.

A simple way to get and stay organised is to create a to-do list each day. As you complete each item, check it off your list.

Since some tasks are more important than others, aim to tackle the high-priority ones first.

Know your numbers

There are many online resources that can help you get organised.

Keep detailed records: No matter how busy you are, take the time to keep careful accounting records.

By doing so, you know where the business stands financially and can often get a better, and earlier, grasp of any potential challenges you might be facing.
