MBABANE – A spectacular showcase of vocal artistry unfolded at the Esibayeni Lodge on Sunday, as 11 choirs converged for the Standard Bank Choral Competition.

When the final notes faded, it was His Majesty’s Correctional Services Choir and Sweet Sounds that emerged victorious, claiming the top spots in the Large and Standard categories, respectively.

Standard Bank’s enduring commitment to the arts took centre stage during the presentations. Mlamuli Hlatshwayo, the Head of Business and Commercial Banking at Standard Bank, delivered a poignant address highlighting a remarkable 29-year legacy as the competition’s title sponsor.

“We are proud sponsors,” Hlatshwayo affirmed, emphasising that the bank’s relationship with the local Choral community goes far beyond corporate social investment. “We understand that the financial contribution we make is not worth the beautiful, priceless work we have witnessed on this stage today,” he said.

The sentiment of gratitude was warmly echoed by Sihle Gumbi, the President of the Eswatini National Choral Music Association (ENCMA). In his address, Gumbi expressed deep appreciation for Standard Bank’s unwavering support, which has kept the Choral movement thriving through changing times. Looking ahead to next year’s historic milestone, Gumbi dropped an exciting teaser for Choral music enthusiasts. He revealed that as the competition celebrates its 30 anniversary next year, the association wishes to elevate the experience to new heights by hosting the festival at the prestigious Ezulwini. The Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs, Bongani Nzima appreciated the Mbabane Chamber Orchestra stating: “Allow me also to extend sincere appreciation to the Mbabane Chamber Orchestra for the wonderful musical contribution and professionalism displayed throughout this event.

Your artistry continues to elevate the standard and experience of our competitions.’’

He also highlighted that the two choirs were celebrating 50 years of existence stating “Today, we also make special mention of two remarkable institutions of Choral music: Manzini Choir and Asihlabelele Choral Society, both of which have remained active for over 50 years. This is an extraordinary achievement worthy of celebration and admiration.
