BMW is preparing to redefine the luxury SUV segment with the upcoming BMW iX5 and the message is clear: The future is no longer about choosing one technology over another. It is about freedom of choice.

The biggest talking point surrounding the all-new iX5 is BMW’s long-promised ‘technology-open’ strategy finally becoming reality. For the first time ever, a single BMW X5 model line will eventually offer five powertrain options:

  • Petrol
  • Diesel
  • Plug-in hybrid (PHEV)
  • Battery-electric (BEV)
  • Hydrogen fuel-cell technology (FCEV)

According to AutoTrader.co.za, production is scheduled to begin in August 2026 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the United States, with fully electric variants following in December 2026. Better news for local enthusiasts? The luxury SUV has also been confirmed for the South African market.

Sets standards, not trends

BMW says the iX5 is not designed to follow trends, it aims to establish new benchmarks.

The fully electric iX5 promises a range of up to 525 miles (WLTP), positioning it as a serious contender in the premium electric SUV market. Beyond the numbers, BMW is focused on creating a vehicle that combines everyday practicality with future-focused technology.

Bold design with a powerful presence

Every line makes a statement

The iX5 adopts BMW’s new design language while remaining unmistakably part of the X family.

Its upright front fascia features expressive LED headlights with unique double-X icons, while the illuminated BMW Iconic Glow Kidney Grille adds a futuristic identity. Viewed from the side, the SUV maintains classic BMW proportions with a long bonnet and flowing roofline that balances elegance with muscularity.

Large, sculpted surfaces create a monolithic appearance, while the rear adopts a wide, confident stance that reinforces its commanding road presence.

Step inside the digital future: Luxury meets intelligence

Inside, the BMW iX5 takes a major leap into the digital era. The cabin comfortably accommodates up to five adults while creating an atmosphere focused entirely on the driver.

The BMW Panoramic Vision display stretches across the windscreen, delivering important driving information directly in view. It works alongside a free-cut central display, a 3D Head-Up Display and an optional Passenger Screen that allows front passengers to access entertainment and digital features independently.

A standard two-part panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light and can be opened at the touch of a button for an open-air feel.

Premium touches such as ambient lighting, crystal detailing, genuine slate accents and a choice of Veganza or BMW Individual Merino leather upholstery elevate the luxury experience.

Smarter driving, greater control: AI assistance that works with you

BMW is introducing its new Symbiotic Drive technology, designed to create a more natural connection between driver and machine.

With intelligent AI support, advanced systems assist rather than take over. Features such as Driving Assistant Plus, Motorway Assistant and Parking Assistant Plus aim to reduce stress on both long journeys and daily commutes.

Power meets efficiency Driving pleasure, reinvented

At the heart of the iX5 is BMW’s new ‘Heart of Joy’ system — a central computer unit working with BMW Dynamic Performance software to manage driving dynamics and power delivery with precision. The SUV also introduces sixth-generation 800-volt battery technology, promising improved efficiency, faster charging and increased driving enjoyment. Add bidirectional charging capability and smart charging features, and the iX5 appears ready to fit seamlessly into modern life. The future of luxury mobility is arriving and BMW is stepping into it with confidence.
