LUDZIDZINI- It is yet another memorable day for the girl child, as they have gathered to deliver the reed at Ludzidzini Royal Residence.
A reed is a plant that grows in swamps and is used to cover enclosures (emaguma) at the royal residences and imiphakatsi across the country. The fetching of the reed is exclusively reserved for virgin girls in recognition of their commitment to preserving their virginity.
Those who participated in the event will remember the delivery of the reed as a significant milestone in 2026. The young girls from all four corners of the country and beyond delivered the reeds before Their Majesties at Ludzidzini Royal Residence this afternoon. They were led by Princess Sakhizwe alongside Indvuna Bongiwe Vivane Hlatjwako. Also present to witness the delivery was former South African President Jacob Zuma.
Following the delivery of the reeds, the maidens proceeded to the cultural stadium, where they will perform brief demonstrations tomorrow before Their Majesties and the entire world in readiness for the main day of the event tomorrow. During the main day of the annual Umhlanga Ceremony, the maidens have an opportunity to showcase their chastity before Their Majesties and the spectators, in appreciation for their commitment to maintaining their virginity. The ceremony also aims to promote the protection of young girls from engaging in love affairs, which could expose them to sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
The buildup to the main event has attracted thousands of emaSwati and tourists from all over the world. Among the visitors are tourists who came to the country solely for the Trade Fair. Several tourists expressed that they had visited the country specifically to witness the ongoing event.
The arena is open to all nations wishing to share their cultural heritage with emaSwati. Interviewed tourists expressed their desire for a culture that encourages and appreciates young girls for preserving their virginity until their personal time for making such choices.
