MBABANE- Eswatini has retained regional influence after swimming chief Pedro Nunes was elected to the Africa Aquatics Zone IV Bureau.
The Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) announced Nunes’s election on Tuesday, September 15, confirming that he would succeed former association president Herman Jele, who previously represented Eswatini on the regional bureau.
Nunes’s election ensures Eswatini continues to have a voice within the governance structures of Africa Aquatics Zone IV, which oversees the development of swimming and other aquatic disciplines across the region.
He will serve a four-year term, with responsibilities including contributing to administrative governance, strategic initiatives and the advancement of competitive aquatics among Zone IV nations.
The ESA described the election as recognition of Nunes’s experience, commitment and contribution to the development of aquatics.
The association also paid tribute to Jele for his years of service and contribution to swimming and aquatics in Eswatini and the region.
ESA chief executive officer and secretary general Nozipho Mahlalela congratulated Nunes on his election, saying his experience and vision would strengthen the Bureau’s work.
“His experience, commitment and vision will make a valuable contribution to the Bureau’s work,” Mahlalela said.
Mahlalela added that Nunes’s election would strengthen collaboration among Zone IV nations and support the continued growth of aquatic sport.
For Eswatini, the election represents continuity in regional aquatics governance, with Nunes now taking over the responsibility previously held by Jele.
The ESA said it was confident that Nunes would provide progressive leadership and contribute to the advancement of swimming and aquatics across the region during his four-year tenure.
