MBABANE – New champions will be crowned in the football category of the Southern Africa Inter-Municipal Sports Association (SAIMSA) Games played in Eswatini.
It will be either Eswatini’s Nhlangano Town Council or Buffalo City Metropolitan of South Africa who lift the title. The two sides meet in the final at 2pm at Mavuso Sports Centre on Friday 25 September, the final day of the Games involving 55 municipalities from Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho, South Africa and host nation Eswatini.
Both teams booked their places with convincing semi-final victories at Somhlolo National Stadium yesterday evening. Nhlangano knocked out last year’s silver medallists, Matsapha Town Council, with a 2-0 win.
It was not the first time Nhlangano had got the better of Matsapha this year as they also defeated them by a solitary goal to become Eswatini Inter-Municipal Sports Association (ESIGA) Games champions.
In the other semi-final, Buffalo City were ruthless against Namibia’s Municipality of Walvis Bay, drubbing them 4-1 to advance to the final. Walvis Bay and Matsapha will contest the third-place play-off at noon.
In the darts competition, Walvis Bay are the champions after defeating their Namibian counterparts, the City of Windhoek, 10-8 in the final. The City of Cape Town took third place with an 8-4 victory over Maseru.
Table tennis has also been concluded. Team Gaborone of Botswana claimed the mixed doubles title, with the City of Cape Town finishing second. Bokomoso of Team Gaborone went on to win the ladies’ singles, while Cape Town’s Henry collected the men’s doubles crown.
