EMCU empowering pharmacists, transforming healthcare  

Pharmacists are often the healthcare profes­sionals standing between patients and the medicines they need, but their role goes far be­yond simply dispensing tablets.

This was brought into focus last Friday when healthcare pro­fessionals, pharmacy students and industry leaders gathered at Eswatini Medical Christian University (EMCU) to celebrate World Pharmacist Day under the theme ‘Empowering Pharmacists for Healthier Futures’. The cele­bration provided an opportunity for those in the pharmacy and healthcare fraternity to reflect on the evolving role of pharma­cists and the important contri­bution they make to a stronger healthcare system.

COLLABORATION

Hosted in collaboration with Cospharm, KEPA and SANU, the event brought together different players in the sector for a day filled with insightful Continuing Professional Development (CPD) presentations, interactive ses­sions and valuable networking opportunities.

The discussions highlighted the need to continuously empower pharmacists with knowledge, skills and opportunities to re­spond to the changing healthcare needs of communities. With healthcare becoming increasing­ly complex, pharmacists are no longer viewed only as the peo­ple who prepare and dispense medicines.

They play an important role in promoting the safe and effec­tive use of medicines, educating patients and supporting other healthcare professionals in de­livering quality care.

For pharmacy students, the celebration also offered an op­portunity to connect classroom learning with the realities of the profession and gain insights from those already working in the field.

EMCU holds a particularly sig­nificant position in the develop­ment of pharmacy education in the country. The university is the first institution of higher learn­ing in Eswatini to offer a Bach­elor of Pharmacy programme, creating an important pathway for young emaSwati who want to pursue careers in pharmacy.

CELEBRATION

The presence of students at the celebration, therefore, added another important dimension to the day. These are the future pharmacists who will eventually become part of the healthcare system and contribute to the health and well-being of commu­nities across the country.

As the profession continues to evolve, celebrations such as World Pharmacist Day serve as an important reminder that in­vesting in pharmacists is also an investment in healthcare.

The message from the celebra­tion was clear: When pharma­cists are equipped, supported and empowered, patients and communities stand to benefit.

And as Eswatini looks towards a healthier future, the pharmacy profession has an important role to play in making that future a reality.
