Mdzimba View sets record straight on beanie ban

MBABANE – Mdzimba View Shisanyama has officially clarified the motives behind its controversial decision to ban beanies on its premises.

The move follows growing public debate and misconceptions surrounding the origins of the new dress code policy.

Addressing the decision, the venue’s Marketing Manager Sakhile Dlamini confirmed that the ban was not an impulsive move, nor was it the opinion of a single staff member. Instead, it was a collective measure taken by management to safeguard the venue’s atmosphere and respond directly to patron safety concerns.

According to management, the policy came after repeated incidents at the venue involving individuals wearing these specific beanies. These occurrences led to numerous complaints from visitors who associated the headwear with criminal activity, reporting that its presence made them feel uncomfortable and unsafe.

“As an establishment that prioritises customer experience, we had to take these concerns seriously. We discussed measures that would help maintain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone,” the manager stated.

Management emphasised that the policy is not an explicit accusation against every individual who wears a bunnie hat. Instead, it serves as a proactive measure to address customer feedback and protect overall public confidence in the venue’s security.

Following the announcement, public speculation suggested that the policy was the personal agenda of a newly appointed team member. Management firmly dismissed these claims, reiterating that the mandate represents an official establishment policy.

“This was not my personal decision. It was a collective decision made by the Mdzimba View team. Because I recently joined the team, some people may associate the announcement with me. However, the policy did not originate from me, nor is it a personal campaign against any particular group. My role is to support the team’s direction and communicate the establishment’s position professionally”, he said.

The venue also addressed concerns regarding potential stereotyping, particularly around patrons associated with street culture or specific casual attire such as Dickies clothing, worn All-Star sneakers, or earrings.

Management stressed that Mdzimba View does not judge patrons or label them as troublemakers based on their socioeconomic background or fashion choices.

“Fashion choices alone do not establish a person’s character or intentions. We must distinguish between an individual’s appearance and their actual conduct. Every customer deserves to be treated fairly and any concerns about threatening or unlawful behaviour should be addressed based on the behaviour itself and credible evidence, rather than assumptions about how someone dresses,” he said.
