EZULWINI – Ezulwini Catholic Primary School saw 260 pupils participate in the World Drowning Prevention Day Commemoration, organised by the Eswatini Seals Swim Academy two days ago.
These figures were confirmed by the school’s Head teacher, Musa Mdluli. The event began with a walk from Ezulwini Catholic Primary School, leading to the Cuddle Puddle pool. There has been a confirmed number of 16 deaths caused by drowning since January this year locally, according to a Scuba Diver from the Operational Support Services Unit (OSSU) Search and Rescue Team. Lifeless bodies were discovered in big rivers such as the Great usuthu.
This national event, held under the coordination of the Ministry of Health and in collaboration with multiple stakeholders, represents a unified effort to address the silent yet deadly crisis of drowning in Eswatini. Eswatini Swimming Association (ESA) Secretary General (SG) Nozipho Mahlalela commended the initiative. “As water-related activities increase, especially among children and young people, the need for education, awareness and proper safety infrastructure becomes a matter of urgency for us as a nation,” Mahlalela said.
She said the initiative not only empowers the public with life-saving knowledge but also reflects a strong commitment to public health and community resilience. “We commend all stakeholders. These are the Eswatini Seals Academy, Red Cross, Eswatini Swimming Association, Municipality of Ezulwini, and Horst Sayler of the Cuddle Puddle, for actively supporting and participating in this vital programme,” she said.
