Eswatini riders crowned as African champs

MBABANE – Four local riders demonstrated their exceptional equestrian prowess this past weekend, clinching the prestigious African Shield 2025 title.

The Equestrian Federation of Eswatini (EFE) announced the triumph yesterday, revealing that the competition took place at Ponderosa Ranch’s Equestrian Grounds in Nelspruit, South Africa.

EFE Secretary General Kerry Deakin highlighted the venue’s superb cross-country courses and warm hospitality, which created an ideal setting for Africa’s top eventing equestrians to showcase their skills, leaving lasting memories for competitors and spectators alike.

Eventing is an equestrian discipline that challenges a horse and rider’s versatility and partnership across three distinct phases: Dressage, cross-country and show jumping. It is often referred to as an equestrian triathlon because it tests different skills.

Deakin noted that this year’s event drew elite teams from across the region, with riders and their horses enduring long journeys to vie for the coveted Inter-Africa Eventing Shield.

 “Following a thrilling competition, with the outcome hanging in the balance between South Africa and Eswatini during the final show jumping phase, it was Eswatini’s team of eventers who emerged victorious,” Deakin said.

She added that Eswatini has now etched its name in African equestrian history as the 2025 regional champions.

“Their journey to the top was a testament to meticulous preparation, unwavering determination and the profound bond between horse and rider.”

The triumphant Eswatini team comprised four outstanding riders: Thokozani Nhlabatsi, Jenna Morris, Liam Emmett and Peter Kay.

Each brought unique strengths, forming a dynamic unit that excelled in every challenge. Behind their success stood Coach Peter Emmett and Chef D’equipe Ann Davies, whose tireless dedication and expert guidance were instrumental.

“Emmett’s strategic insight and attention to detail prepared the team for every obstacle, while Davies masterfully managed logistics and morale, ensuring peak performance from both riders and horses,” Deakin explained.

Their leadership fostered an environment of confidence and unity, allowing the athletes and their equine partners to shine.
