MANZINI – South Africa’s (SA) Kaizer Chiefs legend, Itumeleng Khune, says more sponsors are needed to uplift the morale of the sport in the country.

Khune made the comments yesterday at Mavuso Sports Centre, immediately after arriving in the country with his former teammate and former Mamelodi Sundowns player, George Lebese.

The duo is in the country as the 8Bet Trade Fair Cup 2025 ambassadors and will be at Mavuso today for the opening matches of the tournament’s second edition.

Khune noted that the number of foreign imports from Eswatini to SA has greatly declined, while Lebese struggled to name a single local player who played during his generation before an injury forced him to retire.

“It’s more important that more companies invest in football, similarly to what 8Bet is doing, as it gives grassroots an opportunity to grow. This will definitely strengthen local football, and its talent will eventually be spotted beyond the border, as has been the case before,” Khune said.
