MBABANE – SABC hunted Babukisi Foundation for a virtual interview last week, where they spoke more about local culture and heritage.
SABC is the South African Broadcasting Corporation, which is the public broadcaster in South Africa and provides 19 radio stations as well as six television broadcasts and three Over-The-Top services to the general public. It is one of the largest of South Africa’s state-owned enterprises and the biggest state broadcaster in Africa.
During an interview with Babukisi Foundation Director Thobejane Magagula, he revealed that SABC contacted them last week. “As Babukisi Foundation, we were called by SABC last week asking to do an interview with us as part of their news bulletin. I asked them why they decided to contact us, they said they follow us on social media and have also realised that their content even helps people from outside the country. It was easy for us to understand their point because our content is well organised. We have English captions for songs which are sung during ceremonies. This makes it easy for anyone who does not speak siSwati to comprehend our content,” Magagula said.
He further revealed another idea which made SABC look for them. “So, during the past week, they were commemorating culture and heritage in South Africa and this will go on for the whole month of September. During the interview, they asked us about our traditional regalia. They asked more about its importance. After the interview, they also called and thanked us. They also sent an official invitation for a live interview, in Johannesburg scheduled for September 30. They said this will give them more opportunity to ask even more about the culture of Eswatini,” he said.
Magagula also highlighted the beauty of such an interview, citing it hoists the local flag abroad. “This helps market the country and its culture abroad. The country will not only be elevated within Africa, but in the whole world. As Babukisi Foundation, we are happy about attracting the attention of SABC, this is part of our goals and vision. As the director of the foundation, I got a chance to be one of the actors on ‘Shaka iLembe’, which is something that boosts our curriculum vitae. The more we gain such experience, the more we will be able to support the nation with our work,” he said.
