MBABANE – Team Eswatini have clinched an impressive haul of 12 medals at the Lesotho National Youth Games, which concluded in Maseru this past week.
The event marked the second edition of the friendly games between the two kingdoms, running from Thursday and concluding two days ago.
The Eswatini Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (EOCGA) sent a contingent of 12 athletes across four sporting codes, who collectively secured seven gold, three silver and two bronze medals. Athletics was the top contributor with four gold medals.
The athletes were accompanied by four coaches, with star sprinter Sibusiso ‘Swazi Bolt’ Matsenjwa serving as the Chef de Mission.
The kingdom’s medal tally started strong on Friday, with two boxers each securing a gold medal in their respective categories.
A report from the Mountain Kingdom confirmed that the boxing competitions began on Thursday, with male boxer Calvin Gumbi winning his first fight to advance straight to the final.
Female boxer Nothando Mshayise received a direct entry to the final as there were only two participants in her division. In the final bouts, both athletes emerged victorious over their opponents to claim gold.
