CAMEROON – Cameroon’s 92-year-old president Paul Biya is determined to secure an unprecedented eighth term in the upcoming elections today.
Despite facing significant security and economic challenges, Biya remains a strong contender against his rivals.
However, his pursuit of another term is increasingly contested by growing calls for political change and demands that he step aside.
Paul Biya has been the second president of Cameroon since 1982, having previously served as the country’s fifth prime minister under President Ahmadou Ahidjo from 1975 to 1982.
He is currently the second-longest-serving President in Africa, the longest consecutively serving non-royal national leader globally, and the oldest sitting head of state in the world.
“I would also thank you warmly for initiating our gathering. It enables us to re-examine and easily accept our common history and to reassert our desire to rebuild our future more than ever,” says Biya.
Biya continues to command support from various officials, including the Mayor of the capital city Buea, David Mafany.
