For many, leaving a corporate career to pursue a passion is a dream and for Nokuthula Dlamini, known widely as Noks, it was a strategic pivot that saw her transition from managing complex corporate projects to running a thriving international confectionery brand, Sunbites. Dlamini’s journey, which spans roles from business strategy consultant to sugar-free recipe developer and part-time chef, highlights the profitable intersection between health, expertise and entrepreneurial vision.

Dlamini initially launched her confectionery venture, Sunbites, in 2014, focusing on conventional baked goods. However, a significant relocation to South Africa in 2022 prompted a complete business restructure.

The decision to specialise exclusively in sugar-free baking was driven by both personal commitment and market opportunity. Dlamini’s close brother, a dedicated cake enthusiast, was diagnosed with diabetes. This medical reality meant he often found no suitable dessert options when dining out, creating a clear and stressful gap in the market.

“I had to make a plan,” Dlamini stated, recognising the opportunity to differentiate Sunbites from conventional bakers.

Upon moving to a community in South Africa, known for its preference for healthier baked options specifically sugar-free and gluten-free products, Dlamini identified a critical commercial vacancy. She noted that while baked goods were popular, local cafes and cake shops provided limited or no sugar-free alternatives. She perfected her craft, using her brother as a recipe tester and soon saw her strategic effort validated. This niche expertise led to an exclusive invitation to sell her products at a local market, which Dlamini credits as her ‘biggest breakthrough.’

Sunbites: A confectionery with a health mandate

Sunbites now specialises entirely in sugar-free baked goods, ensuring all products are diabetic friendly and suitable for those adhering to keto or Banting diets. The product range has further expanded to include gluten-free, low carb and lactose-intolerant cakes and cupcakes.

The company offers a diverse selection, including custom-made cakes, cupcakes, mini desserts, butter scones and oats crunchies. The brand has achieved significant recognition for its unique offering, establishing a loyal customer base both in Eswatini and across the border in South Africa, specifically in Mpumalanga, where Sunbites is a regular feature at monthly markets dedicated to promoting handmade and locally produced goods.
