As difficult as it may seem sometimes, we do bear the responsibility to ensure that our mental health is kept untainted and fully functioning, in order for it to be able to support our busy lives. For that very purpose, one key factor is the very subtle act of being able to set boundaries; both physical and psycho-emotional, as a means of buffering, preserving and promoting the wellness of your mental health everyday. We live through constant bombardment from our personal, social and work lives so much so, it becomes quite easy for our ‘spaces’ to get contaminated and overloaded and thus overwhelming us at times.

This then creates a mental health environment that no longer becomes conducive for proper functioning and fully-fledged mental health wellness, thus affecting our lives as a general whole. In the case of setting boundaries, this serves the duty of securing our ‘psychological perimeters’ and making sure that we have enough energy for the right functions at the right time. Mental health is very much an intensive feature of our lives, therefore, it calls for us to be very selective how we spend, how we invest, as well as how we expend our mental health resources for our own sake.

A lot of times, setting boundaries requires, somewhat, stern personal decision-making and making the very intimate choice of opting to care for yourself instead of making overinvesting into certain, specific situations.

Even though this may seem uncomfortable at times, it is important in the management of our time, our psycho-emotional resources, as well as our well-being that we do this and keep our mental health in line as a ‘safety harness’ that holds us firm as we navigate our lives.

The importance of this lies in the fact that, because we are a daily reflection of our mental health state, we do have the due responsibility to show out as being able to consistently make rational, sound and effective decisions, have well-thought out ideas that truly reflect our well-being. A lot of the time, mental ill-health is brought out by being ‘swamped’ and the struggle to cope or manage how we deal with the things that go on. Without boundaries, we are liable to making the mistake of allowing our psycho-emotional resources to be overused and strained as we try to give everything equal attention.

This then, has the detrimental effect of overbearing on our mental health, thus causing us to succumb to the stress and strain that come about as a result of this, hence breeding a psychological environment unfit for full purpose.

The issue of being able to set boundaries is a bit of a tricky one, however, it is a monumental feature of adult life and an important skill to have as we grow older. It teaches us how to be selective of our time and effort while concurrently lecturing us on the wisdoms of psychological hygiene.

It may sometimes prove a tad uncomfortable to execute, however, instilling that sort of principle and living by it creates an individual fit and ready for purpose and whose psycho-emotional resources are kept regenerating and spared from waste.

Therefore, it helps greatly to be conscious of this as we live and consider our mental health going forward. Send comments to runsford0505@gmail.com
