MBABANE – Eswatini might be about to add another player to its growing list of talents abroad.
According to sources close to the matter, Botswana giants Orapa United are closely monitoring Philani Mkhonto, the most expensive player in the Eswatini Premier League, currently playing for Manzini Sea Birds.
A scout from the Botswana side has reportedly been sent to watch Philani in action and is said to be impressed with his performances so far this season.
Philani, who previously represented Mbabane Highlanders, has scored four goals in six league matches, helping Manzini Sea Birds sit atop the log standings with 13 points.
The striker has also earned 19 national team caps for Eswatini and has scored three goals and is valued on the market at approximately E1.4 million, highlighting his rising profile in the region.
Efforts to reach Manzini Sea Birds’ PRO Sandile Mkhize were futile as he could not be immediately reached. However, one official confirmed that he heard of the news and if the deal go through, it would be good for the team and country.
The protracted move is expected to materialise during the January transfer window, giving Philani an opportunity to test himself in a more competitive league.
Orapa United are one of Botswana’s most successful sides. Domestically, they have won multiple Botswana Premier League titles and domestic cups. On the continental stage, the team have participated in CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions, regularly challenging some of Africa’s top sides. Known for their attacking style and strong squad depth, Orapa have a reputation for scouting talent across Southern Africa and nurturing emerging stars.
Locally, several other players are making waves and drawing attention. Among them are Justice Figuareido of Chippa United, Lindo Mkhonta of Sesco United, Mxolisi Mkhonto, currently on loan at Morupule Wanderers from Jwaneng Galaxy and Alakhe Mdluli of Amazulu.
