MBABANE – Red tape and a heavy security presence proved paper-thin defence at the Prince of Wales Sports Ground yesterday, as chaos erupted during a goalless MTN Premier League ‘mini-derby’ between rookies Amawele and capital city giants Mbabane Swallows.

Security lines failed to hold back a wave of fury as angry supporters, allegedly joined by Swallows officials and marshals, attacked Assistant Referee Zamani Simelane. The spark for the violence was Simelane’s decision to disallow a last-gasp goal that would have snatched a 1-0 victory for Umkhonto KaShaka.

In the dying embers of stoppage time, Swallows captain Newman Philiso unleashed a stinging long-range free-kick that goalkeeper Andile ‘Khune’ Zwane failed to handle. Prolific attacker Njongo ‘Jakalazi’ Mazibuko pounced on the loose ball and bundled it into the net.

What should have been scenes of unbridled jubilation for the ‘Birds’ quickly turned ugly. The moment Simelane flagged for offside, an official charged towards him, unsuccessfully attempting to trip him. Simultaneously, fans breached the 10-metre exclusion zone, swarming the official.

The security detail—comprising police, private guards, and marshals—was caught napping. By the time they reacted, the skirmish had escalated, with the referee, Wandile Mamba, also targeted. The officiating team eventually found sanctuary near the goalposts, shielded by a wall of security as aggrieved fans gestured menacingly, demanding the goal stand.

Under the IFAB Laws of the Game, a player is penalised for offside if they gain an advantage by playing the ball after it has rebounded off a goalkeeper or the woodwork, provided they were in an offside position when the initial shot was fired.

Following a five-minute cooling-off period, play resumed with an indirect free-kick. Caleb ‘No-Nonsense’ Ngwenya’s charges were unable to find a breakthrough in the final two minutes. At the final whistle, security acted swiftly to whisk the officials to safety as the disgruntled crowd dispersed.
