MBABANE – Broadcasting legend S’gayoyo ‘Sgi’ Magongo says the upcoming Mbabane and Shiselweni derby matches are proving too tricky to predict.
Speaking during yesterday’s national radio Sports Show with host Siphesihle ‘Sihlabani’ Nxumalo, the veteran commentator, famed for his heydays at Eswatini Broadcasting and Information Services (EBIS) shared his insights into the high-stakes weekend ahead.
The action kicks off today at King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium, where Nsingizini Hotspurs host Rangers at 3pm. This Shiselweni derby is set to decide the winners of the elite league’s first-round ‘carrot’, a guaranteed E120 000 prize, with both sides mathematically still in contention.
Log leaders Nsingizini, who sit on 28 points, will be without two influential figures: Thubehle Mavuso and versatile defender Kwakhe ‘Stopper’ Thwala. Mavuso is serving a suspension following a tally of yellow cards, while Thwala has reportedly submitted a transfer request in search of ‘greener pastures’. Their opponents, Rangers, currently hold 23 points.
“It is always difficult to predict a derby, and that has always been the case. It is especially true for the Shiselweni derby because the rivalry is relatively new,” Magongo remarked. “One might assume Nsingizini will have an easy afternoon, but Rangers have surprised everyone this season. They are highly motivated, and this match is sure to produce fireworks.”
Focus then shifts to tomorrow at the Mavuso Sports Centre, where Mbabane Swallows host archrivals Mbabane Highlanders. While ‘Umkhonto KaShaka’ have dominated the ‘Black Bull’ for the past three years, current form suggests a tighter contest. Swallows sit in 10th place with 16 points, just one point behind 8th-placed Highlanders on 17.
