MBABANE – Taiwan’s long-standing commitment to Eswatini’s healthcare system has taken a new step forward as the Taiwan Medical Mission relocates to Manzini Government Hospital, bringing specialist and cancer care closer to communities.
The move, effective February 2, 2026, is part of Eswatini’s Healthcare Decentralisation Policy and reflects Taiwan’s continued support in strengthening the country’s public healthcare system.
The mission has worked alongside Eswatini’s health authorities for many years, providing specialist services in urology, orthopaedics, neurology, cardiology and infectiology, while also training junior doctors and supporting disease prevention efforts.
The Manzini Government Hospital, formerly the TB Hospital, will now become the mission’s main clinical base and will be developed into a Smart Healthcare Demonstration Hospital. The facility will integrate modern medical equipment, digital health systems and smart technologies to deliver efficient, patient-centred care.
At the new base, the mission will offer specialist outpatient clinics, multidisciplinary consultations, diagnostic imaging interpretation and clinical training for local health professionals. By reducing waiting times and improving diagnostic accuracy, the mission aims to ensure patients receive timely and informed treatment.
To extend specialist services beyond the hospital, the Taiwan Medical Mission will also operate two weekly telemedicine clinics. These will connect patients and local healthcare workers with specialists from Taipei Medical University Hospital, especially in areas where specialist care is limited.
Services will include paediatrics, haematology, endocrinology, nephrology, radiology, dermatology and rheumatology. This initiative will enable patients to access expert medical advice without the need to travel long distances, or face costly referrals to South Africa.
Supported by the Government of Taiwan, the mission is also implementing a dedicated Cancer Care Project at Manzini Government Hospital. The project provides oncology diagnosis and chemotherapy services, with specialist doctors consulting on-site.
Pathologists and laboratory professionals are stationed at the hospital to ensure timely testing, while essential chemotherapy medicines and supplies are made available. This allows cancer patients to receive treatment locally, reducing financial strain and the burden of cross-border travel.
