MBABANE – Historic!
The Times of Eswatini has officially launched its inaugural Half Marathon, marking a historic milestone in the newspaper’s 100-year history as it expands its contribution to national development beyond the printed word.
Scheduled for Saturday, May 23, 2026, the event will start and finish at the EOCGA offices next to Somhlolo National Stadium. Runners can choose from three categories: 5km (E70), 10km (E130) and 21km (E170) for early registration. Sign-ups are expected to open as early as next week, with fees structured in three phases to encourage early entry. Children under five and persons with disabilities will participate free of charge, while cash prizes totalling E50 000 are up for grabs.
Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima described the marathon as a timely investment in national wellness and economic growth during the official launch which was held at Ramblas Restaurant yesterday.
“The theme ‘Your Pace, Your Race’ reminds us that this event is inclusive. It belongs to everyone—young and old, elite athletes and beginners alike,” Nzima said.
He noted that Eswatini continues to face rising cases of non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes and hypertension, adding that mass participation in sporting events plays a critical preventive role.
Beyond health, the minister stressed the race’s economic impact on the Lobamba–Ezulwini corridor, citing opportunities for accommodation providers, transport operators and local businesses. “This half marathon is not just a sporting event; it is an economic driver that will stimulate local enterprise,” he said.
Speaking at the launch, Times of Eswatini Managing Director (MD) Martin Dlamini said the race reflects the company’s commitment to building a healthier nation.
“This is the first national sporting initiative in our history. We are taking our role beyond informing the nation to actively shaping healthier lives, one stride at a time,” Dlamini said. He added that the race aligns with His Majesty King Mswati III’s vision of a productive, healthy population, noting that the event fosters accountability, discipline and teamwork.
The event is hosted in partnership with Athletics Eswatini (AE), Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC), Ezulwini Municipality Council, Eswatini Mobile and e-Mali, which will handle digital registration and payments.
AE President Zakhele Dlamini said the event has the potential to grow into a national championship, calling for it to be developed into a fully-fledged marathon that could serve as a benchmark for international qualification. ESRC CEO Darius Dlomo added that the platform gives the nation a chance to identify new talent and revive the glory days of long-distance running.
e-Mali CEO Nozipho Dlamini concluded by stating that the partnership reflects a shared belief that innovation and collaboration are essential to building a modern, inclusive economy that serves all emaSwati.
