The psychological aftermath of a collapsed romance is rarely pretty, but for some, it is fertile ground for creation.

Aphelele ‘Apes’ Ndlangamandla explained that ‘Love Turned Me Psycho’, is an emotionally charged EP that dives into the wreckage of love when it mutates into obsession, paranoia and self-destruction.

Born from a period of intense emotional instability, the project serves as a raw document of the moment affection curdles into something darker and far more difficult to control.

Rather than offering the neat resolution of a typical breakup record, this project dwells in the discomfort of a mind spiralling in real-time.

It is less of a reflection on romance and more of an exploration of the psychological debris left behind when a relationship breaks a person.

Sonic Landscape and Vulnerability

Sonically, the EP adopts a moody, stripped-back production style. This minimalism is intentional, providing the necessary space to highlight themes of vulnerability, tension and inner conflict.

By eschewing overproduced layers, the music mirrors the exposed state of the artist’s psyche.

The creative process was equally unvarnished.

To maintain the authenticity of the initial emotional spark, the artist utilised voice memos to bridge the gap between inspiration and the final studio versions. “My choice was based on feeling,” Apes explained.

Navigating the Release

Despite the compelling nature of the work, the release strategy remains unconventional.

Currently, the EP is restricted to grassroots platforms while the team behind the project navigates the complexities of the industry. “The EP is only available on Sound Cloud and YouTube for now. This is because we’ve been trying to find a suitable distributor,” the artist notes.

By prioritising emotional truth over commercial polish, ‘Love Turned Me Psycho’ offers a stark look at the thin line between devotion and derangement.

“I recorded some demos on my phone so I could still have the same feel when creating the actual songs. And also, the writing process wasn’t all ‘cream and peaches’ because I had to stay on topic for the project to be cohesive,” he said.

It is a haunting addition to the contemporary lo-fi landscape, proving that sometimes, the most captivating stories are found in the pieces that cannot be put back together.
