BUHLENI — Unmatched joy unfolded as Lutsango from the four regions of the country arrived for the first leg of this year’s Buganu Festival.

Soft voices echoed through the nearby buildings as the regiment sang various songs while arriving at Buhleni Royal Residence from 1pm. Among the songs was: “Umangibona Ingwenyama, uyathokoza umoya wami. Uboteka kakho ndabazezwe.”

The regiment arrived in a convoy of buses under tight security provided by the Royal Eswatini Police Service. Upon arrival at the royal residence, they proceeded to the marquee to place their bags while awaiting the delivery of Marula brew and tetfulo before Their Majesties.

Notably, some members arrived bearing tetfulo – pumpkins, carrots, wooden spoons, wooden forks, apples, maize meal and other commodities – carried on their heads.

Lutsango from Magele Royal Kraal was among those who carried tetfulo in this traditional manner. Lutsango from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security also arrived with marula brew and other wrapped gifts, including fruit.

The regiment was welcomed with sleeping mats, referred to locally as beds, which vendors sold for E10–E15. They were also offered small shields, sold for E50–E80. The small cow-skin shields are an essential part of the proper attire, playing a significant role during the formation.

The Buganu ceremony provides opportunities for small businesses across the country to sell their products, such as clothing, food and alcohol.

Vendors are given free stalls and operate under tight security for three days, from Friday to Sunday. By the time the regiment arrived at the royal residence, many vendors had already set up wares. The majority sold ice blocks, which were in high demand because of the hot weather.
