MBABANE – Mavuso Sports Centre was the only place to be on Friday as the air crackled with the raw energy of school pride and sporting ambition.
In a breathtaking display of speed and stamina, 15 schools converged on the stadium for a pulsating track and field encounter staged by the Eswatini Schools Sports Association (ESSA) Manzini Branch. This year saw a surge in participation, with Manzini Branch Chairman Sabatha Mkhonta noting the return of St Theresa’s and Salesian alongside fresh faces such as Harolds Academy.
It was a colourful scene under the scorching sun. The 5 000-capacity stadium was pushed to its limits and the stands were packed. As the battles on the track intensified, the atmosphere reached a fever pitch. The air was pierced by the rhythmic shrills and soul-stirring songs of pupils who refused to let the heat dampen their spirits. Armed with umbrellas to defy the sun and placards to cheer on their school heroes, the pupils turned the grandstands into a sea of vibrant colour.
The competition was fierce across the under-16, under-18 and open categories. Sprinters pushed themselves to the limit, desperate to bring glory to their school badges. However, the track was a cruel mistress; while some athletes found the extra push to storm to victory, others were left heartbroken. Their dreams turned to dust just inches before the finish line as their legs buckled under the strain.
Due to the sheer scale of the event and the density of the schedule, the sun set before all honours could be bestowed. While a few golden moments were celebrated on the podium, the bulk of the medal haul is expected to be officially handed over to the respective school teachers tomorrow. This was confirmed by the Secretary, Mfundo Shabangu.
