MBABANE – In a night defined by historical resonance and sporting defiance, Eritrea marked their return to the continental stage with a clinical 2-0 victory over Eswatini’s Sihlangu Semnikati.
Competing in their first competitive international match in nearly 19 years, the ‘Red Sea Camels’ capitalised on the neutral turf of Stade d’Honneur to seize control of this 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Preliminary Round first-leg encounter.
The significance of the result cannot be overstated. This victory represents Eritrea’s first win in AFCON qualifying in 18 years, nine months, two weeks and three days. Their last taste of such success came on June 16, 2007, when they defeated Kenya 1-0.
The deadlock was broken by Siem Eyob-Abraha, before Ali Sulieman doubled the advantage deep into stoppage time to stun Sihlangu. Despite a history of withdrawals from the tournament, which is often cited as a measure to prevent player defections, Eritrea showed no signs of competitive rust.
They looked every bit the side that famously finished second in their 2008 qualifying group, a campaign that included home-and-away wins over Kenya and a solid haul of nine points. Since their debut in 2000, where they held giants Cameroon to a goalless draw, the Eritrean side has teased potential that has often been sidelined by off-pitch circumstances.
For Sihlangu Semnikati, the path to a maiden AFCON qualification has suddenly become a mountain to climb. Eswatini now returns to the Somhlolo National Stadium next Tuesday, needing to overturn a daunting 2-0 deficit. Failure to do so will end their pursuit of the group stages and a first-ever appearance at the finals.
Both nations share the unwanted distinction of having never qualified for the continental showpiece, but after last night’s heroics in Morocco, it is Eritrea who hold the keys to the next round.
