MBABANE – Eswatini’s very own Lerato Shongwe is hoisting the national flag high in the Far East, proving that local talent knows no borders.
The basketball sensation, who left Eswatini at the tender age of 13 to pursue a scholarship at Tongtex Secondary School in Taiwan, has evolved into a formidable force on the international courts. His journey, which began at the Dunkylaine Basketball Academy, has reached a new peak as he transitions from a decorated high school career to the university ranks.
Dunkylaine coach, Mzwakhe Phiri, who has been instrumental in the youngster’s development, could not hide his pride regarding Lerato’s discipline and rapid ascent.
“Lerato quickly adapted to the highly professional basketball environment and continued to grow both as a player and as a young man,” Coach Phiri noted. “Through hard work and determination, he helped lead his school team to the HBL finals, where he was crowned MVP after an outstanding performance.”
The accolades do not stop there. During his final year at Tongtex High School in Hsinchu, Shongwe was named Athlete of the Year. His dominance in the paint was undeniable, as he finished the highly-rated High School Basketball League (HBL) tournament as the best rebounder and best blocker. These performances caught the eye of professional scouts, yet his team has opted for a ‘student-first’ approach.
“Professional teams had already started showing interest in him,” Phiri explained. “But because we strongly believe in the importance of education alongside basketball, the decision was made for him to focus on completing university first.”
Shongwe has now graduated and earned a prestigious scholarship to the National Taiwan Sport University (NTSU), one of the top-tier institutions in the country. The young star is currently in Japan, representing his team in the Asian Nation NBA Tournament, having previously qualified through the Taiwan NBA Rising Stars competition.
Reflecting on the support system that made this possible, Coach Phiri extended his gratitude to Shongwe’s parents for their unwavering belief, and his partner in Taiwan, who provided a “home away from home” for the athlete.
“Lerato has finished what he started, and his life and basketball career are moving in the right direction and at the right pace,” Phiri concluded. “His story is proof that anyone can achieve their dreams as long as their heart and mind are fully committed.”
