From humble beginnings to industry leader

Nearly half a century ago, a small LiSwati-owned tyre retreading factory in Mbabane laid the foundation for what would grow into Eswatini’s leading passenger and commercial tyre company.

In those early years, tyre retreading was a novel concept in the country and the business faced many challenges. Nonetheless, the Directors of Swazi Bandag remained committed to quality and service excellence, paving the way for steady growth. The company secured pivotal contracts with major industries, initially Usutu Pulp and then established key partnerships with the sugar sector in Big Bend, Mhlume and Simunye. These relationships proved to be a turning point, cementing Swazi Bandag’s reputation as a committed partner in the tyre industry.

Growth through strategic partnerships

Swazi Bandag’s success is rooted in its ability to build strong, lasting relationships. Initially, a single retail branch was established in Mbabane, followed by expanding to Matsapha, Manzini, Big Bend, Matata and Mhlume. This brought a reliable supply of passenger, commercial and agricultural tyres, combined with related services to additional regions of the country.

By the late 1980s, Swazi Bandag formed franchise partnerships with global brands, namely Dunlop (Dunlop Zone / Express), Bridgestone (Supa Quick) and Continental (BestDrive), thereby extending its customer base and solidifying a position of industry leader.

Overcoming challenges

The road to success has not been without obstacles. The COVID-19 pandemic placed enormous strain on the company’s finances, threatening its stability. Through disciplined financial management and strategic restructuring, Swazi Bandag not only survived, but also emerged stronger and more focused on sustainable growth.

The greatest challenge was met in June 2021, during the civil unrest, when the company’s head office, retread factory, warehouse and the BestDrive retail branch were destroyed by arsonists. In the aftermath, Swazi Bandag embarked on rebuilding its retreading facility and head office in Matsapha, unveiling a refreshed corporate identity that reaffirmed its resilience and commitment to its customers, community and the country.

Today, Swazi Bandag employs a team of over 150 emaSwati and is reflective far more than a tyre retreading company. It offers comprehensive solutions for our retail, commercial and contract clients, operating five franchise retail outlets across Eswatini and a state-of-the-art commercial truck tyre service centre in Matsapha. The company also maintains three on-site 24/7 service contracts in the sugar industry.

Services extend to wheel balancing, alignment, tyre repair and complimentary tyre insurance. The Matsapha Bandag retread/repairs factory produces commercial tyre retreads for customers casings and stock retreads. Their 24/7 ETA service ensures round-the-clock support for all commercial vehicles nationwide and cross border.
