In Eswatini, conversations about oral health aren’t always prioritised from a young age.

This often means dental care feels more like an emergency than a routine part of wellness. But what if visiting the dentist could feel different?

Oral Essence Surgery owner and Head Dentist Dr Ziphozonke Maziya is determined to change the narrative. She recognises the real obstacle many emaSwati face when seeking care.

“I understand that visiting the dentist can be overwhelming; I have been there myself,” Dr Maziya expresses.

“Dental anxiety is real, and it is one of the biggest reasons oral health is often neglected. That is why we have made it our mission to create a calm, welcoming space where you will feel heard, cared for and at ease. All focused on helping you and your family smile with confidence again.”

According to Dr Maziya, the key to avoiding the dental anxiety and emergency visits is simple: Consistent, proper dental care at home. Oral hygiene is not a once-in-a-while activity; it’s a daily commitment to preventing issues before they become painful and expensive problems.

The foundation of proper care remains the same:

  • Brush twice daily
  • Floss once daily
  • Replace your brush
  • See your dentist regularly.

Dr Maziya shares that while most people know the basics of brushing and flossing, there are critical connections between your mouth and your overall health that often go unrecognised.

She expresses that one’s mouth is the window into one’s overall systemic health. Chronic gum disease (periodontitis) is a low-grade bacterial infection.

If left untreated, the inflammation and bacteria in your gums don’t stay contained in your mouth; they can enter your bloodstream. “Taking care of your gums is genuinely a step towards protecting your heart and metabolic health,” she shares.

Most people think they should brush their teeth immediately after every meal.

However, if you have just consumed highly acidic foods or drinks – like soda, citrus fruits (oranges, lemons) or wine, Dr Maziya shares, your tooth enamel is temporarily softened.

Brushing immediately after consuming acid can damage the enamel by scrubbing away the softened layer.

Instead, she advises: “It is better to rinse your mouth with water or chew sugar-free gum to neutralise the acid and wait at least 30 to 60 minutes before brushing.”

Dr Maziya and the team at Oral Essence Surgery, located in Shop No.3, Summer Place Shopping Complex, Mancishane Street in Manzini, believe your path to a healthy smile shouldn’t be filled with stress.

They’re dedicated to transforming dental visits from a dreaded chore into a positive, proactive step towards better health.

By focusing on patient comfort and understanding, they ensure that everyone, especially those who have avoided the dentist, feels supported throughout their journey.
