This week’s My Car & I spotlight falls on a young motoring enthusiast from Mbikwakhe, Matsapha, Lungelo ‘Lungster’ Simelane, the proud owner of a VW Golf 1 Velocity that turns heads long before it even arrives. Affectionately known as Zero Zero Two, inspired by the  digits on its number plate, this car has become a recognisable presence on the streets and at local car meets.

Lungster has had his Velocity for two years and his pride in the machine is immediately clear. To him, the appeal of the Golf 1 Velocity goes beyond style, it’s the perfect blend of simplicity, reliability and character. “It’s a simple and easy-to-maintain car,” he says, a nod to the durability and mechanical friendliness that has kept the Golf 1 a beloved classic in Eswatini.

Don’t mistake simplicity for subtlety. Zero Zero Two makes its presence heard and felt. Riding on drop springs and fitted with a flame-thrower kit, Lungster’s Velocity demands attention. “It’s not just a Golf, it’s a Velocity,” he emphasises.

With its distinct ‘Velocity voice,’ the car belts out what he calls ‘sweet melodies,’ a soundtrack enjoyed by Lungster and anyone within earshot.

One of the standout features of this particular model is that it’s an A/C spec Golf, a rare and welcome addition for many Golf 1 fans. For Lungster, it means sunny Eswatini days are no problem. With the air-conditioner blowing cool air, cruising becomes a comfortable experience, proof that old-school doesn’t have to mean outdated.

The Velocity’s blue metallic paint glistens in the sun and adds to its unmistakable presence. Inside, the powerful sound system provides another layer of the car’s personality, adding bass, clarity and excitement to every drive. Whether he’s rolling through Matsapha or parking at a show, the audio setup guarantees attention.

Under the hood, Zero Zero Two remains impressively authentic.

It runs on a stock standard 1.6 fuel-injection Velocity engine, paired with MP9 wiring, offering a balance of power, reliability and classic Golf 1 performance. Lungster loves that it stays true to the original Velocity spirit, powerful enough to be exciting, yet dependable enough for everyday use.

Stay tuned for next week’s edition of My Car & I as we continue to celebrate Eswatini’s most passionate drivers and the machines they love. If you would like to feature your ride on this platform, contact 7936 3694.
