One of the fast-emerging calamities on the road is crashes resulting from the use of cellphones by drivers, whether male or female.
All road users; drivers, passengers and pedestrians, are not exempt from this traffic sin, with drivers being the worst offenders because chatting, calling and texting divert attention not only from focusing on the road, but also from scanning the road environment while navigating through traffic.
Men are the worst culprits when it comes to using cellphones while driving, because of the dishonest way they relate to the purpose of the gadget.
Their counterparts, women, also use their phones while driving and can simply stop the habit when they are not under pressure, unless they are indulging in their famous ‘Multi-tasking Syndrome’.
However, most men, especially married ones, are not accessible on their gadgets when their wives are around. He could be at home over the weekend or back from work.
There may be serious business, personal and intimate calls, chats and texts coming from various people that he cannot answer because he has muted the gadget.
He escapes the house and jumps onto the road with the gadget
No sooner is a married man out of the house than he switches the gadget to loud mode while getting into the car. From Lavumisa to Mbabane, Gentleman Naughty would be returning calls, at times with the vehicle at full speed, meandering through traffic and not adhering to road markings and signage. Depending on the intensity of the conversation, this guy may slow down in the path of fast-moving vehicles because he is captivated by what he is listening to.
Many crashes have occurred as a result of this irresponsible, selfish and negligent road use by married men who cannot hold all conversations and respond to all texts in the comfort of their sofas and cushions back at home.
These guys neither have the time nor the patience to pull off the road to deal with their shenanigans, but instead plunge through traffic and risk the lives of everyone they encounter in the thick of it.
By the time they reach their destinations, they would have appeased the agitation and anger of those whose calls they missed and whose texts they ignored while languishing in their ‘in-house gallows’.
Men who aren’t in a hurry text while they drive
The very guy who was cruising in the morning while talking on his phone is not in a rush as he drives back home from the office. It would take him double the time on the road to get there, as he would be texting every Marlyn, Margaret and Sosobele while driving and amid traffic.
The guy is oblivious to the queue of vehicles behind him, driven by other frustrated motorists because, given the terrain of the road, they cannot overtake his snail-paced vehicle.
He is not even aware of that because his full attention is on the phone and his eyes are fixed on the gadget. Motorists caught in this scenario become impatient and overtake incorrectly, resulting in crashes.
