Sidvokodvo – The engines arrived first, then came the dust, music and leather as the 33rd edition of the Swazi Rally roared into life on Friday.

By 11am, Riders Ranch at Sidvokodvo was already warming up for three days of bikes, music, camping and high-octane fun.

Chrome gleamed under the late-winter sun, tents went up and biker crews from across the region claimed their weekend spots before the party properly began.

Among the early arrivals were celebrity bikers and members of the M109 motorbike club from South Africa, whose entrance gave the campsite its first proper dose of swagger.

The Swazi Rally, founded in 1993 by Carlos Paiva, his wife Sonia and a small dedicated team, has grown from a small gathering of biking enthusiasts into one of the region’s biggest motorsport and lifestyle events. Held every last weekend of August, it has built its name on roaring machines, loyal riders, open-air entertainment and nights that do not hurry to end.

For some rally lovers, missing the event is simply not an option. A number of regulars have attended from the early years and still speak fondly of watching the trees at Riders Ranch grow tall with the rally. For them, the place is not just a venue. It is part of the ritual.

One rally veteran, Solowist of the Celebrities Bikers, said the event kept improving while holding on to its old magic. “The camping is bigger, the facilities are better, but the feeling is still the same. I always miss something, though. I have always missed the cultural village all these years and this year I really want to experience it,” he said.

The fun begins long before the gates. The ride to Sidvokodvo takes bikers through Eswatini’s rolling hills, winding roads and open views, giving them the kind of scenic warm-up that makes the destination feel earned. As numbers have grown, organisers have expanded camping areas and ablution facilities to keep pace with the crowd.

This year’s edition, which runs from August 28 to 30, is promising a louder, bigger and more colourful weekend. While bikes remain the heartbeat of the rally, the entertainment package has turned it into a full lifestyle experience for riders and non-riders alike.

The music line-up is carrying serious star power. Multi-award-winning Hip Hop artist K.O, popularly known as Mr Cashtime, is expected to bring favourites such as ‘Caracara’ and ‘SETE’ to the stage. Amapiano hitmaker DJ Stokie, known for dance-floor favourite ‘Superman’, is also on the bill, while dynamic performer Rosetta is expected to add her own flavour to the weekend in nearby Ezulwini.

That blend is exactly what has kept the rally fresh. It still belongs to the bikers, with custom builds, revving engines, charity rides and campfire stories forming its backbone. However, the music, food stalls and social buzz have widened its appeal, giving weekend revellers plenty to enjoy even without a bike key in their pockets.

By late afternoon on Day 1, Riders Ranch was already in weekend mode. Mechanics were tuning engines, vendors were firing up braais and old friends were trading rally memories while new arrivals looked for the best camping spots. The real action was still ahead, but the opening day had already done its job.

The bikes were in, the beats were building and Sidvokodvo was ready to play. Today the fun continues.
