MBABANE – Eswatini will make history this week.

The Eswatini Chess Federation (ECF) debuts a five-member team at the Third International Chess Federation (FIDE) Chess Olympiad for People with Disabilities in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, running in the period September 9-18, 2026.

Organised biennially by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), the prestigious tournament offers visually, hearing and physically-impaired players a global platform to compete at the international level under standard classical time controls. Poland claimed gold at the inaugural 2023 edition in Belgrade, while the FIDE 1 team captured the title at the 2025 event in Astana.

The historic milestone marks Eswatini’s expanding footprint in international adaptive sports. Speaking during an official send-off ceremony at the Eswatini Sport and Recreation Council (ESRC) headquarters, ECF President Vukani Dlamini highlighted the significance of the nation’s debut.

“This is historic because it is the first time we are sending a team to compete at the highest level of the sport, and we are extremely proud to send them to Uzbekistan,” Dlamini said, extending appreciation to the ESRC for providing essential financial and logistical backing.

ESRC Chief Executive Officer Darius Dlomo commended the national federation for embracing inclusive sports governance and urged the squad to make an impact on the international stage.

“It is a major privilege and responsibility to represent the country,” Dlomo said. “This campaign will see you travel across three continents, which should serve as inspiration. Go and give it your absolute best so that you can draw immense pride and enjoyment from competing on the grandest stage.”
