MBABANE – Fifty years of song, tradition and musical memory took centre stage at the Southern African Nazarene University (SANU) yesterday as Asihlabelele Choral Society celebrated its Golden Jubilee in grand style.

The celebration, was honoured by Liqoqo Chairman Chief Paul Dlamini, brought together generations of choristers, former members and fellow choirs from Eswatini and South Africa in a powerful display of unity through music. It was an afternoon rich in harmony, nostalgia and reverence for a choir that has become a pillar of Eswatini’s choral landscape.

Founded five decades ago, Asihlabelele has weathered changing times while remaining steadfast in its devotion to choral excellence. From humble beginnings to national acclaim, its journey has been defined by discipline, fellowship and an unwavering love for song. Yesterday’s jubilee was not merely a concert, it was a homecoming.

Voices old and new filled the SANU auditorium, with guest choirs adding depth and colour to the programme. Each performance paid tribute to the society’s legacy, weaving together sacred hymns, traditional compositions and contemporary choral pieces that charted its evolution over 50 years.

The anniversary was a moment to honour those who laid the foundation and those who continue to carry the torch. Tributes were paid to departed members whose contributions helped shape the choir’s identity.

For many former members, the day evoked fond memories of rehearsals, competitions and tours that forged lifelong bonds.

As the final anthem echoed through the hall, one message was clear, 50 years on, Asihlabelele’s song is far from over. It is stronger, richer and more resonant than ever a proof to unity, resilience and the timeless power of music.
