LOBAMBA – Around 400 enthusiastic pupils yesterday illuminated the iconic Somhlolo National Stadium for the Goal Getters Eswatini Vaccine Confidence Workshop.
The festivities were headlined by former Chelsea and England star Eniola Aluko. The event marks the launch of the Goal Getters initiative in Eswatini, making it the first country in Africa to benefit from the collaborative project between Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) and GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, which is a public-private global health partnership dedicated to saving lives and protecting people’s health by increasing access to immunisation in lower-income countries.
Details of the initiative were first disclosed two days prior by Chris Ewdean, UEFA’s Head of Communications Content, during a press briefing at Sigwaca House. The briefing attracted local football dignitaries, including Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Vice President Steve Horton, Technical Director Bhekisiza ‘Bizzah’ Mkhonta and a host of Eswatini football legends.
In yesterday’s action-packed programme, educators from 16 schools also attended, alongside three current Sihlangu national team players: Philani Mkhonto, Junior Magagula and Botswana-based midfielder Mxolisi Mkhonto.
“The numbers here today reflect this event’s success,” Horton said, offering a brief welcome to the young participants.
Ewdean emphasised Eswatini’s pioneering role, noting that the initiative’s success here would serve as a model for other Confederation of African Football (CAF) Member Associations.
