MATSAPHA – A quiet revolution in Eswatini football was set in motion yesterday, not with a roar from the terraces but with the soft swipe of innovation.

The Premier League of Eswatini (PLE) unveiled its smart card at Matsapha Lifestyle. Launched with an initial batch of 1 000 cards, the PLE smart card has been tipped as a potential game-changer for club sustainability. Minister for Sports, Culture and Youth Affairs Bongani Nzima, unveiling the initiative, revealed that should 10 000 cards be snapped up this season, clubs could collectively rake in up to E1 million – a lifeline many have long craved.

“This is more than a card,” Nzima said. “It is a loyalty programme, a revenue engine and a statement that Eswatini football is open for business.” He added that the model ensures real benefit for clubs, with 80 per cent of the E100 subscription portion going directly to the supporter’s nominated team, deposited transparently into mobile money accounts.

PLE Chairman Polycarp Dlamini described the smart card as a bridge between passion and partnership. “Through this card, supporters stop being spectators and become stakeholders,” he said, urging fans and corporates alike to rally behind the initiative to create sustainable, recurring revenue for teams.

PLE Head of Business Development Sibusiso ‘Scorpion’ Nxumalo outlined the commercial appeal, noting that corporates can purchase premium blue cards, while partnerships are already in place with retailers such as OK Foods, Engen, King Pie and Khubha Traders, with more brands, including KFC, in the pipeline.

Skyfly Group President Musa Dlamini said the digital card, available via skyfly.mobi or the PLE website at a cost of E150, offers cashback rewards and future incentives, including possible free-match benefits. Crucially, it will also function as an express stadium pass, allowing fans swift entry by simply swiping in.

Club representatives welcomed the initiative with open arms. Mbabane Swallows Public Relations Officer (PRO) Knowledge Ngwenya hailed it as timely relief for cash-strapped teams, while Green Mamba’s Ntuthuko Dlamini praised the added fan rewards that extend beyond football.
