Local DJ, Seluleko Mdluli has one journey that explains that success is not an overnight achievement, but rather a calculated symphony of academic discipline and raw, unbridled passion.

Known to his growing legion of followers as Vonslu, Mdluli has navigated a path that took him from the quiet landscapes of Eswatini to the pulsing heart of the African music scene.

His journey is a witness to the idea that while talent might be the spark, it is the relentless pursuit of excellence that fans the flames. Born and raised in the Kingdom of Eswatini, Mdluli’s upbringing was a nomadic one. He moved frequently, absorbing the unique energies of Simunye, Manzini and Pigg’s Peak.

It was at Mhlatane where he spent his early high school years before eventually matriculating from Sisekelo High. This transient lifestyle perhaps gifted him with his most vital asset, a versatile ear.  His musical identity is a patchwork quilt of his family’s diverse tastes. He recalls his mother’s devotion to the soulful melodies of Ringo and the spiritual harmonies of Ncandweni Christ Ambassadors.

In contrast, his father filled the home with the smooth, velvet textures of 90’s RnB. His elder brother introduced him to the steady, hypnotic pulse of House music, while the influence of Sdee in Manzini provided a blueprint for what it meant to be an all-round musician.

While Mdluli admits this environment shaped him, he maintains that his love for sound felt entirely natural, as if it were woven into his DNA.

Mdluli is a self-described academic. Although he stepped away from an Actuarial Science Degree, that analytical mindset never left him. He approaches music with the same precision one might apply to a complex equation.

This ‘perfectionist’ streak is both strength and a weakness; his fiercely independent nature means he often insists on doing everything himself to ensure it meets his exacting standards.

He spent two years honing his technical skills during Grade 10 and 11, but it was after matriculation that the transformation truly began.
