MBABANE – Lindelwe Dlamini is a Swati contemporary artist and creative based in Japan whose work continues to push the boundaries of texture and form.

Dlamini has been exhibiting since 2015, Dlamini has evolved from traditional painting to tactile, textile-based creations, incorporating materials such as beads, fringe, leather and other three-dimensional elements. The resulting pieces sit firmly at the intersection of contemporary art and fashion.

Dlamini moved to Japan after securing a sponsored role through a competitive online application process. “I applied for a job online and was sponsored by a company that took care of the whole process. I applied to many companies online and I was lucky one of them was very keen and willing to facilitate the move. I think my greatest secret in life is that I don’t get tired of trying my luck even when it looks impossible, usually it isn’t,” she said.

Securing a foothold in the competitive Tokyo fashion scene stands out as a defining moment in Dlamini’s career. Highlights include exhibiting custom bags during Tokyo Fashion Week and participating in the TUF Agents Fashion Show. TUF, Tokyo United Fashion is an international platform connecting designers, models and creatives between Japan and the global fashion community, with branches in Canada, Korea and Dubai. “Being part of that environment allowed me to see my work presented in a completely different context,” she said.

Commercial success has followed the artistic acclaim. “I also held a solo exhibition where I sold 70 percent of the art in a weekend, that’s a strong second runner up,” added Dlamini.

Drawing inspiration from fashion, architecture, landscapes and human psychology, Dlamini transforms ordinary elements into visually striking compositions. The work explores the relationship between beauty and deeper themes of identity, visibility and the human desire to be seen.

Professional growth has relied on active networking and clear community ties. “Attending events and networking. I have found most of my support comes from the black community, for example TUF, my upcoming month long exhibition and an exhibition in Shibuya on September 26, are all a result of the unity in the black community. I also send out emails to spaces I like and usually get opportunities that way,” she said.

The Swati born artist promises further exploration of textiles and dimensionality. “People can expect a continuation of my exploration of art, fashion and textiles, with highly tactile and dimensional pieces that are best appreciated up close,” she concluded stating that one of her hopes is having to choose between fashion and art, as a marriage of the two will be a strong theme in her work going forward.
