NHLANGANO – What was meant to be a day of celebration turned to heartbreak as the awakening of sleeping giants Mbabane Swallows left Nsingizini Hotspurs wounded.
Despite the 1-0 loss, Hotspurs received their maiden E120 000 first-round champions’ replica cheque on home soil.
This unfolded during a pulsating MTN Premier League Week 15 clash at a packed King Sobhuza II Memorial Stadium yesterday. While the result left Insingizi on 31 points, they remain at the summit; even if Manzini Sea Birds win their game in hand against Sisonkhe to equal them, the head-to-head rule favours the Shiselweni-based side.
The visitors arrived baying for blood, desperate to end a dismal run against the hosts, having only recorded one victory over them since 2023. Following fixture rearrangements due to torrential rain across the country, the opening round of the season will now officially conclude this Wednesday.
High-profile dignitaries witnessing the encounter included Sports Minister Bongani Nzima, PLE Chairman Polycarp Dlamini and MTN Acting CEO Jerry Soko.
Nsingizini entered the fray missing key defensive pillars, with Kingsley Kwakyi, Nkosingiphile ‘Skomota’ Shongwe and Vuyo Macina all forced to watch from the stands. Meanwhile, Caleb Ngwenya’s Swallows arrived full of confidence following their 1-0 win over Mbabane Highlanders. Their only change saw forward Bongi ‘Karas’ Magagula replace the suspended Njongo Mazibuko.
