MBABANE – Senior Women’s National Team Sitsebe Head Coach Bongani Makhukhula has selected a strong 22-member squad that will pursue regional glory.

The local women’s squad will be competing in the Hollywoodbets Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Women’s Championship 2025, which gets underway in Polokwane today. Up to 11 teams from the Southern Africa region do battle for the coveted trophy.

It could be one of the most hotly-contested tournaments yet and there is certainly much intrigue after the group-stage draw. The top teams in each pool advance to the semi-finals, along with the best runner-up.

Meanwhile, prior to Sitsebe’s departure yesterday at the Lobamba-based Technical Centre, the squad was sent off by Eswatini Football Association (EFA) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Frederick Mngomezulu.

In his  remarks, the EFA CEO shared that this year they got the regions’ powerhouses, citing Zambia in his remarks. “This year, you have a tough group. When you talk about the likes of Zambia, you are talking about a team that comes from the World Cup and is always in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).”

“Even the highest paid player in Africa, playing in the USA comes from Zambia, it tells you that this is a powerhouse nation,” remarked Mngomezulu.

Zambia enter the tournament as reigning champions, having lifted the COSAFA title in 2022 and 2024, while finishing runners-up in 2023.

He further stated that the task ahead of the senior women’s team is rather a huge one, but assured that if they put their best foot forward and show determination on the field of play, they will yield the desired results.
