Ethembeni Primary School recently hosted a vibrant culture day, transforming its grounds into a showcase of heritage and youthful energy.

The event was boosted by the presence of the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC), which used the platform to further its mission of adding value to artistic and cultural endeavours.

The council’s participation aligns directly with the Eswatini National Arts and Culture Policy. According to the policy, “it is the mandate of the council to promote arts and culture in conjunction with the government.”

By engaging with the pupils, the ENCAC demonstrated how traditional values can be preserved within a modern educational framework.

The school grounds were a kaleidoscope of colour as pupils arrived dressed in traditional attire. The atmosphere was electric, filled with the rhythmic sounds of drumming and the soaring voices of children performing folk songs. This event was not merely a break from the classroom; it was a practical lesson in identity and history.

Teachers and parents collaborated to ensure the day was an authentic representation of Eswatini’s rich customs. Pupils participated in traditional dances, showcasing footwork and precision that belied their young ages. These performances served as a reminder that culture is a living, breathing entity passed down through generations.

Literacy

Beyond the dance and music, the day focused on the importance of cultural literacy. The ENCAC representatives engaged with the community, explaining how the national policy works to protect the creative industry from the grassroots level up.

Their presence lent a sense of prestige to the school’s efforts, proving that local traditions have a significant place in the national agenda. The ‘Tradition Meets Tomorrow’ theme resonated throughout the festivities. While the pupils celebrated their roots, they did so with an eye on the future, demonstrating how heritage can provide a solid foundation for the next generation of leaders and artists.
