Do motorists consider pedestrians as part of traffic?

The country is experiencing an unprecedented surge in serious pedestrian injuries and fatalities. The plight is widespread in can no longer be assumed to be in densely populated areas only. So much has been said to pedestrian-pupils on their way to school as to how they ought to cross the road safely by observing and crossing as designated areas where providence of same exists. Adults have also been made aware of the dangers of crossing the road flippantly or even walking in the dark without being reflected. Notwithstanding all the warnings, pedestrians of all ages, especially children on their way to school, continue to be maimed and killed. The problem seems to be unabated, yet it occurs in every corner of the country. It is time the challenge to save the life of a pedestrian is bestowed upon motorists. For starters, drivers ought to be cognizant of the fact that pedestrians are part of traffic too. They have every right to be on the road so long as they are occupying that space correctly having positioned themselves well; whether they are walking or waiting where they will not attract a crash from automobile.

Motorists must respect zebra crossings

While pedestrians, mostly, have been schooled to cross at marked areas, those who drive cars seem not to respect that shared space. Prior to painting of zebra crossing, there is an erection of signage informative of the prevalence of pedestrians, especially pupils. There shall also be a sign compelling driver to reduce speed But Alas! Motorists are hardly adherent to the signs and that is evident for the excessive speed at which they pass such places. Many pupils have been crippled and killed in the middle of zebra lines having correctly observed the said space. Some drivers would overtake halted cars giving way to pedestrians to cross and in the mad quest to surge forward and thus kill a pedestrian. Do motorists ever consider pedestrians to be part of traffic?

Densely populated areas and unmarked crossing areas

Wherever the road runs, there is bound to be people, communities and by extension using that road for access to certain areas. Society has realized a massive surge of liquor outlets even in the outskirts of cities. This is bound to bring density of the community population in one area beside the fact that business areas are almost always on the other side for some people. This has brought a lot of activity on the road, yet motorists never assume a pedestrian may incorrectly cross the road. It cannot be denied, of course that at times pedestrians are at fault in the event they are seriously injured or killed in traffic. Be that as it may, it remains the motorists’ principal duty to look out for and save the lives of other road users, pedestrians inclusive. For that matter, anyone who cuts through a densely populated area where designated crossing areas aren’t made provision of, it is imperative that the diver kills his speed before he kills someone walking along the road.
