The MTN Khemani Road Classic once again stamped its authority as one of Eswatini’s premier cycling events, drawing an impressive mix of local and international talent for its 11th edition in 2025. With bigger numbers, improved safety measures and a vibrant atmosphere, this year’s event solidified its place on the regional cycling calendar.

This year’s race attracted 172 riders and of these, 66 per cent were Eswatini cyclists, showcasing strong local interest. The rest of the field was made up of riders from South Africa (21 per cent) and neighbouring countries such as Botswana, Namibia and Mozambique. The growing international presence highlights how the Khemani Road Classic is steadily becoming a sought-after event beyond Eswatini’s borders.

Safety first

With cyclists sharing live roads with motorists and even the occasional stray animal, organisers made safety their top priority. Thanks to the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS), especially from Mankayane and Gege, the race was well-guarded with motorcycle escorts for the 100km, 60km and 30km categories. Traffic at crossings and junctions was carefully managed, while marshals were deployed at strategic points to boost visibility and ensure rider protection.

The Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services provided crucial backup, with medical teams and ambulances patrolling the route and stationed at key points. Clear signage and community involvement further ensured a safe environment for both riders and motorists, giving participants peace of mind throughout the race.

Evolution of the Classic

Since its inception, the Khemani Road Classic has grown into one of the most anticipated races in Eswatini’s sporting calendar. Organisers have worked tirelessly to improve both rider and spectator experiences each year, with unwavering support from MTN, the title sponsor since day one. The race now attracts more international teams, uses professional timing systems for accurate results and partners with local companies for essentials like water points. Community engagement has also expanded, turning the event into a festival of sport and culture.

Routes and categories

The 2025 edition featured four categories:

  • 100km (elite route)
  • 60km
  • 30km
  • 5km Kiddies Ride

These routes catered to both elite cyclists and mass participation riders, making the event inclusive for all ages and abilities.

A true cycling celebration

With record numbers, enhanced safety and broader appeal, the MTN Khemani Road Classic 2025 not only celebrated the spirit of cycling, but also reaffirmed Eswatini’s place on the regional sporting stage.
